How to Apply a Wall Sticker – Quick & Easy Method

Applying your vinyl wall sticker/decal is the process of transferring the design from the backing paper onto your wall or chosen surface using the transfer paper supplied. It is straightforward when you take your time and follow the steps carefully.

This guide explains how to prepare your surface, test whether your wall is suitable, apply your sticker correctly, troubleshoot common problems and remove your sticker safely when the time comes.

Before You Start

Before applying your wall sticker, please check that your surface is suitable. Wall stickers work best on smooth, clean, dry, flat and fully cured surfaces.

Do not apply your wall sticker to surfaces that are:

• Freshly painted or not fully cured.
• Textured, rough or porous.
• Damp, dusty, dirty or greasy.
• Recently cleaned with products that may leave residue.
• Painted with low-adhesion or specialist paints such as wipe-clean, easy-clean, anti-mould, silk or some low-VOC finishes.

If your wall has been recently painted, please allow the paint to fully cure before applying your sticker. We recommend waiting at least 3–4 weeks, but some paints may need longer depending on the paint type, room conditions and manufacturer guidance. Paint that feels dry to the touch may not yet be fully cured. Outgassing from curing paint can stop the vinyl adhesive from forming a proper bond.

If your wall has been painted with matt, silk, wipe-clean, low-VOC or specialist paint, adhesion may be reduced. In some cases, applying a layer of our Surface Prep Coat can help create a better surface for the sticker to adhere to.

We may also be able to supply selected designs in permanent adhesive vinyl for customers who need stronger adhesion. Please note that permanent adhesive vinyl is not recommended where easy removal is important, as it may be more difficult to remove and could increase the risk of surface damage.

Clean the Wall

Before starting, clean the area where the sticker will be applied using a clean, slightly damp cloth. This helps remove dust, dirt or residue that could affect adhesion.

Allow the surface to dry fully before applying your sticker. Do not apply the sticker to a wet or damp surface.

It is also a good idea to clear the area around the wall before you start, especially for larger stickers. Move sofas, furniture or anything else that could get in the way during installation.

Use the Test Sticker First

A test sticker is supplied with our wall stickers so you can check whether your surface is suitable before applying the main design.

Apply the test sticker to the same surface and location where the main wall sticker will be installed. Rub it down firmly, remove the transfer paper slowly, then leave the test sticker in place for at least 24 hours.

If the test sticker lifts, curls, bubbles, peels away or does not bond properly, please do not apply the main sticker. Contact us first for advice.

If the transfer paper comes away and leaves the test sticker firmly attached to the wall, leave it in place for 24 hours to check for any lifting or peeling. If the test sticker remains firmly fixed after 24 hours, you can remove the test sticker and continue with your main wall sticker installation.

If the test sticker comes away with the transfer paper or does not stay attached to the wall, the surface may be unsuitable. You may need to improve the surface first using our Surface Prep Coat, or contact us for advice before continuing.

Prepare the Wall Sticker

Your sticker will arrive rolled in a sturdy postal tube. This protects it during delivery, but it is best not to leave the sticker stored in the tube for longer than necessary.

When possible, remove the sticker from the tube and lay it flat before installation. If you are not applying the sticker straight away, we recommend unrolling it the day before installation and placing it on a flat surface with light weights, such as books, to help it flatten out.

Do not use anything too heavy or anything with sharp or rigid edges that could mark or damage the sticker.

For best results, store and apply the sticker at room temperature. If the sticker has been stored somewhere cold, allow it to sit at room temperature for around 24 hours before installation. Vinyl can be less flexible and harder to work with when cold.

The 3 Layers of the Sticker

Your wall sticker is supplied in three layers:

• Backing paper: The bottom layer. This usually has text, lines or a waxy coating and protects the adhesive side of the vinyl.
• Vinyl wall sticker: The middle layer. This is the actual self-adhesive design.
• Transfer paper: The top semi-transparent layer. This lifts the vinyl design from the backing paper and helps you apply it to the wall in one piece.

Position the Sticker on the Wall

For this step, you will need masking tape, painter’s tape or another low-tack tape that can temporarily hold the sticker in place without damaging the surface.

Add tabs of masking tape to the top corners of the sticker. For larger stickers, add extra tabs if needed to help hold the sticker in position.

Place the sticker on the wall where you want it. You can use a tape measure to line it up accurately, or you can step back and line it up by eye. In some rooms, walls, floors and ceilings are not perfectly level, so what looks right visually may work better than measuring alone.

Important: Make sure you are happy with the position before applying the sticker. Once the sticker has been applied, it cannot usually be repositioned.

Once you are happy with the position, place two small tabs of masking tape on the wall, one on either side of the sticker, lined up with the top edge. These will act as guides when you return the sticker to the wall later.

Remove the Backing Paper

Take the sticker off the wall and remove the masking tape from the sticker. Leave the guide tabs on the wall.

Lay the sticker on a flat surface with the backing paper facing up. Use a squeegee, application tool or credit card to rub firmly over the whole design. This helps encourage the vinyl to lift from the backing paper onto the transfer paper.

Take one corner of the backing paper and peel it away slowly and carefully at a sharp angle, keeping the backing paper close to the surface as you peel.

The vinyl design must stay attached to the transfer paper.

If any part of the vinyl stays on the backing paper, stop immediately. Lay the backing paper flat again, rub firmly over that area with your squeegee or card, then continue peeling slowly.

Do not keep pulling if the vinyl is not transferring properly. Rushing this step can damage the design, especially small details and thin sections.

Once the backing paper has been fully removed, put it to one side for disposal.

Apply the Sticker to the Wall

Hold the transfer paper by the top corners and line it up with the two masking tape guide tabs left on the wall.

Once the sticker is in the correct position, press the top corners onto the wall. Then use the flat of your hand, a squeegee or a credit card to smooth the top of the transfer paper onto the surface.

Using overlapping strokes, work your way down the sticker from left to right until the whole design has been applied to the wall.

Go over the whole design firmly with a squeegee or credit card to help the adhesive bond with the surface. Pay extra attention to small details, corners, points and thin sections.

Wall stickers work best on smooth, flat surfaces. If your surface has any texture, adhesion may be reduced and the sticker may not bond properly. Only continue if the test sticker has remained firmly attached after 24 hours.

Give the Adhesive Time to Bond

Once the sticker has been applied to the wall, leave it for around 30 minutes before removing the transfer paper. This gives the adhesive time to begin bonding with the surface and can reduce the chance of the vinyl lifting when the transfer paper is removed.

Remove the Transfer Paper

Take one corner of the transfer paper and peel it back slowly and carefully at a sharp angle. Keep the transfer paper close to the wall as you peel rather than pulling it straight out towards you.

If any part of the vinyl lifts from the wall with the transfer paper, stop immediately. Lay the transfer paper back down, rub firmly over that area, then continue peeling slowly.

Do not rush this step. Removing the transfer paper slowly gives the vinyl the best chance to stay bonded to the wall.

Once the transfer paper has been fully removed, dispose of it as it is no longer needed.

Finishing Touch

Remove the masking tape guide tabs from the wall. Your wall sticker should now be installed and ready to enjoy.

Helpful Hints & Tips

• Take your time. Slow and careful application gives the best results.
• Read the full instructions before starting.
• Have everything ready before you begin, including masking tape, a squeegee or credit card, and a clean cloth.
• For larger stickers, it is helpful to have another person assist you.
• Apply at room temperature where possible.
• Do not apply to fresh paint, textured walls, damp walls, dusty surfaces or unsuitable paint finishes.
• If something does not look right during application, stop and check the instructions before continuing.

Troubleshooting

Vinyl can sometimes be tricky to work with, especially on larger or more detailed designs. If something goes wrong, do not panic. The sections below cover the most common issues and what to do.

Vinyl is staying on the backing paper

If the vinyl does not lift from the backing paper onto the transfer paper, stop immediately. Lay the backing paper flat again and rub firmly over the problem area with a squeegee or credit card.

Peel again slowly at a sharp angle. Do not pull quickly or force the vinyl away, as this can damage the design.

Vinyl is lifting from the wall with the transfer paper

If the vinyl lifts from the wall while removing the transfer paper, lay the transfer paper back down and rub firmly over the area again.

Wait a few more minutes, then peel the transfer paper away slowly at a sharp angle. Keep the transfer paper close to the wall as you peel.

If the vinyl still will not stay on the wall, the surface may not be suitable or the adhesive may need more time to bond.

Air bubbles

Air bubbles can be caused by dust, dirt or trapped air during application. Small bubbles often settle over time.

For larger bubbles, carefully prick the edge of the bubble with a pin, then gently smooth the vinyl towards the hole so the air can escape. The hole should be barely noticeable once finished.

Wrinkles or creases

Wrinkles and creases are usually caused by the vinyl not being smoothed down evenly during application.

Gently warm the creased area with a hairdryer, then carefully smooth the vinyl down with a squeegee or credit card. Use only gentle heat and do not overheat the vinyl or the wall surface.

Small sections lifting after application

If a small section of vinyl lifts after application, gently warm the area with a hairdryer to soften the adhesive, then press it back down firmly and allow it time to bond.

If the problem continues, the surface may not be suitable or may need additional preparation.

Sticker will not stick or falls off the wall

If the sticker will not stick or falls away from the wall, this is usually caused by an unsuitable surface, such as fresh paint, textured walls, dusty surfaces, damp surfaces or specialist low-adhesion paints.

Caring for Your Wall Sticker

Once bonded to a suitable surface, your sticker should stay firmly in place. Avoid exposing it to extreme heat, extreme cold or excessive moisture, as this may affect the adhesive and the lifespan of the vinyl.

To clean your sticker, lightly wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not soak it with water, use harsh cleaning products or scrub the vinyl, as this may cause lifting or damage.

Removing Your Wall Sticker

To remove your wall sticker, gently warm the vinyl with a hairdryer. The heat helps soften the adhesive and can make removal easier.

Carefully peel the vinyl away from the surface. Take your time and use gentle heat as needed. Be careful not to burn yourself or overheat the wall surface.

Our removable vinyl is designed to remove cleanly from most suitable, well-prepared surfaces, but results can vary depending on paint condition, surface quality and how the sticker is removed.

Once removed, the sticker cannot be reused.

Once a sticker has been removed from the backing paper, partially applied or fully installed, it can be difficult to confirm whether an issue was present on arrival or happened during installation.

Issues caused by application mistakes, unsuitable surfaces or removal are not covered by our Damage & Delivery Guarantee where the item itself was supplied correctly. This does not affect your statutory rights.
